Complementary items

Complementary items are the types of items that customers often buy together. A well-curated list of complementary items can improve the customer's shopping experience and increase the average gross merchandise value (GMV) of the cart. For example, if a cart contains peanut butter, your site might display a list of complementary items, such as a selection of jams, jellies, marmalades, bananas, and bread.

You can display lists of complementary items at the following times in the customer’s shopping journey:

  • Browsing for items
  • Checking out a cart

Browsing for items

As customers browse for items, you can suggest complementary items. By suggesting complementary items, the customer can save time and increase the chances that they get what they need.

Checking out a cart

Customers might forget a product that they intended to purchase or want to discover new items that complement items in their cart. At checkout, you can display complementary items for each item.
